FAQ - About EUROLTA certification

What benefits does EUROLTA certification bring for language teachers?

So far, member organisations from 16 different European countries, such as Italy, Austria, Switzerland and states in Germany, such as Bavaria, Berlin and North Rhein Westphalia have all been involved in the project. This means the certificate is widely recognised.

Each of these countries joined the EUROLTA project because they are committed to the shared goal of offering language teachers an initial teaching qualification with a solid foundation in methodology in order to make sure that their teachers work as effectively as possible.

For example: The Migros Club Schools in Switzerland (similar to Germany’s Volkshochschulen) have arrived at the point where a majority of the language teachers are qualified.

The ultimate aim ist hat teachers with the EUROLTA certificate will find it much easier to find teaching work across Europe than those without. EUROLTA should enable teachers to start working in a new European country without first having to complete a local qualification.

How highly regarded is the European Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults?

It is certainly true that the value placed on the certificate will increase as more and more teachers decide to take EUROLTA courses.

The countries involved, and the German states already offering the certificate, of course expect more countries and states to join the project in future.

Ultimately, it ist he determination of the partners in the EUROLTA project, their effective marketing of the certificate and the market itself that will decide how the project develops.

Who should aim for certification?

Each language teacher has to decide for themselves whether they want to gain the EUROLTA certificate or not. If a teacher recognises in EUROLTA an opportunity for their own professional development, or sees in EUROLTA the chance to improve their career prospects or personal situation, they should certainly take advantage of this course.

Neither IH Berlin PROLOG or Berlin’s Volkshochschulen want to push teachers to take a EUROLTA course. What we want to do is to offer our teachers the chace to gain a qualification recognised across Europe.

Can language teachers working exclusively with children also gain the EUROLTA certificate?

No. Only language teachers who are currently teaching courses with adult learners can gain the EUROLTA certificate.

Is it possible to write my certification portfolio in any language?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. EUROLTA participants are able to submit their portfolios in German or English language. It is also important to point out that the certification portfolio (including all four of the written tasks) has to be submitted in a single language. If you choose German, everything must be in German. If you choose English, everything must be in English.

Why is EUROLTA a European system?

EUROLTA is a European system rather than a worldwide system as it was established by the ICC - INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE NETWORK out of Hamburg, Germany, supported financially through EU funds and the European Union limits its support to European projects.
