EUROLTA Certificate requirements
Language requirements
The training course is aimed at teachers of any modern language, but the in-course language is German. In order to gain the most from the input and to be fully involved in the training seminars, you should have a German level of at least B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Schedule and timetable
The full EUROLTA courses covers eight weekends and is divided into two parts: Basis and Extended. Both courses can be booked separately. The seminars must be completed in the specified order.
For more experienced second language teachers, it will also be possible to take just the extended part of the course, although the criteria for teachers to join only the second half of the course have yet to be finalised by the ICC.
- Portfolio requirements to enter the course at the extended
stage will include proof of teaching experience and fulfilment
of EUROLTA standards, as well as a 90-minute lesson plan.
As the course takes place on one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) each month, you should be sure that you can commit to attending all sessions of the course. The seminars run from 09:00-16:00.
Assessment
Assessment is based on a portfolio produced by each participant. The dossier comprises written tasks on topics such as Language Learning Processes, Intercultural Learning, Lesson Planning and Lesson Evaluation, as well as the written record of an observed lesson.
The portfolios are evaluated by EUROLTA assessors. It would definitely be an advantage if you have experience using word-processing software programmes, although such experience is not a condition of acceptance on the course. Your portfolio can be submitted in German or English.
Some of the tasks will involve a combination of you observing learners in the classroom, you observing lessons taught by other teachers and focused self-observation.
In addition, a course trainer will observe and evaluate each participant teaching a 90-minute lesson. Records of this observed lesson, along with a detailed lesson plan and materials, are to be included in the portfolio as part of the Self-Assessment and Development section.
